S D T - Smart Diamond Technology for the Microelectronics Industry

The use of thin diamond films has been a topic of interest for two decades. A recent development in the capability to deposit thin diamond films with superb qualities, on a variety of substrates and at low temperatures has transformed the diamond into the ultimate material for thermal management uses in the silicon industry and beyond. A patent pending new nucleation process (NNP) enables the deposition of diamond thin and thick films on any surface that can endure the hydrogen plasma environment involved in the PACVD process. Diamond coatings with a very high thermal conductivity in the range of ~1200W/m*oK, for films of ~3mm in thickness, can be grown on surfaces at reduced temperatures of ~450oC. The diamond being the hardest and most inert of all materials can be used for many applications needing mechanical protection and play a role in hermetic seals of Si based circuits.

The following is a list of possible applications we can envision for the semiconductor industries:

Ultimate thermal management coating for flip chip mounting

New diamond based FEA for flat panel displays

Improved conditioning pucks for CMP polishing pads

Packages for high power electronics & opto-electronics

Coated inner fixtures of CVD/PVD machines for better performance

Intercalated diamond/metal carriers for special high speed circuits

A new diamond package for laser bars (patent pending)

We got an endorsement from Intel regarding the need for a high thermal conductive coating that will prevent "hot spots" and help spread heat laterally in order to lower the channel operating temperature of sophisticated high density circuit. The latest announcement by Intel of the termination of the P4/4GHz CPU program, due partly, to thermal issues, is a good reason to consider our new SDT.

We are open to cooperation from present diamond manufacturing houses as well as from clients who need the special properties of diamond for their systems.
